Dental implants
Dental implants serve as replacements for tooth root. They are placed directly into the upper or lower, into the location where the tooth root was. Dental implants are usually in the shape of a screw. Currently, most frequently used material for implant production is a high-quality alloy of titan. Pure titan is gradually being receded since it is relatively fragile. A dental implant is almost fully inserted into the upper or lower jaw. In the mouth is visible only its very small top part, to which the base for the tooth crown or bridge is fixed. This base is in dental practise referred to as abutment.
The functionality of an implant can be generally characterized by three aspects:
- it can serve as a replacement for a tooth
- it can serve as a base for a fixed bridge serpacing from three to all teeth in the upper or lower jaw
- it can serve as a fixation of denture
